My friend just retired from her teaching career after many years. I was very blessed to have served as a volunteer in her Kindergarten classroom at Monfort Elementary School in Greeley, a couple of years ago. I remember the day she contacted me and asked me if I could help her with twins who where struggling in class. I made time to come down and spend time with them and get to know them. I had no idea this experience would touch me deeply. The girls at that time had just moved from Mexico and started school. Having lived this same experience with my son; with the only difference we moved from El Salvador. My friend thought that I would be a good fit to guide these girls in all school endeavors. I spent the school year working with them and saw how they developed emotionally and academically. At the same time I became closer to her and closer to my passion: Teaching.
I owe it my family, mentors and her, who allowed me to experience the every day meaninfful classroom time that I have had with her students. Seeing my friend swarmed with children hugging her and looking up to her, serves as motivation to finish my degree.
Now retired, her husband wrote a column on the Sunday paper that melted my heart and makes me admire her more and so many other teachers who are making a difference.
