In the Fall of 2014, on my first semester at UNC I took MAS 275-Mexican American Studies. In class we used Egger-Pierola book “Connections and Commitments “. This course became one of my favorites. I found many resources in here, that gave me ides of how to use what I learned in my own class someday. In the book the author presents ways to reach Latino students by using connections from their own culture. It is very interesting how as a teacher you can incorporate these ideas in the classroom, in order for students to find a connection with their roots and feel included in the classroom.
One of the key themes of this course was diversity in the classroom and how teachers need to adapt their lessons to ELL students.
